I know it may be too early and everything, but wouldn't it be great to make our own graphics?

Bami already has some example work and it looks really good!

The only thing needed is some pointers from the programmers of what you prefer when it comes to format and size.

I haven't done much graphics before, but I tried making a litterbin. I use blender as it is free software.

However I haven't been able to extract the original graphics. Can anyone give some pointers to how I can do it? I tried with the RNC extractor and THFormats tool, but all images were only blur, as if still compressed.

If bins would be usable u would need 2 graphics, closed bin and opened bin for animation when someone uses it.

EDIT: I did some in free time. 3ds Max using Bami's template.

Of course. Animation and other angles... One question is how much we want to preserve the original designs. Maybe we want to make each object as different from the original as possible, or maybe we want to stick close to it?

It would be great if I could get help extracting the original graphics so that we can make a list of what needs to be done, and fill in who does what - if we decide to get it going...

I also made a file cabinet: http://www.shuttlex.se/cabinet.avi

I really wouldn't like 3D-rendered stuff for OpenTH. Of course - there could be more than one OpenGFX-Project. I think only pixel art looks nice, rendered stuff is ugly.

But of course, as alternative project it's a good thing and you're grafics are quite nice (without being in game...). Would be good to open up a wiki or todo-list for both, 3D- and pixel art.

That's true. However, I think it's harder to find pixel artists than 3D modelers nowadays... We'll see what happens towards the summer when activity starts to rise. Perhaps we don't want to do any graphics at all at this point.

True, true, true...
We need a list. Pixel arts would be better. Finding artists will be harder.

I started working on plants Wink

We need some asian members. Smile They're great pixel artists.

FreeTrain Shocked

But I'll try it too, when the first (tech) demo of OpenTH is released and I see this project is no waste of ressources Very Happy (I'm optimistic!). But for training in Blender/Max it's a good idea to create some items for now I think. For interested people, you can look what the guys from OpenTTD do - they're working on a 32bpp project (Pixel art --> 3D rendered).

32bpp buildings compared with pixel buildings.

For me it only looks good on highest zoom level in game. But with that it's not good playable. And if you zoom out to get some overview, 32bpp grafics get "milky" like in Transport Giant 2 (isometrical but rendered graphics). Confused

But on the other hand I think (as any of us already said Very Happy) it's REALLY better than nothing, and so we get a real OpenSource-Game and don't have to fear EA.

Edit:
Hm, it could look quite nice - original trash bin compared with Lego3's bin in Theme Hospital's zoom level:

But Lego3's bin needs better lighting... Surprised

Hey, sorry I've been away from the computer for a while.

The 3D models look great. I think something like this could be an advantage to the project. However we do have the problem that we aren't entirely sure how non-TH objects will be imported yet. Paul will have to look at that sometime and it will also depend on the high-level layering wrapper thingy I have to program some time.

But creating 3D models is a fine thing to do for now and then we can figure out how exactly we export it when things need to be animated and such.

If people think that prerendered objects are not in the right style perhaps there is some sort of effect you can apply either in 3D Max or in a graphics editor afterwards to make it seem more comic/cartoony/pixelish/defined or whatever?

I would say the priority should be anything that isn't totally rotatable in the original. I remember toilets are like this, as are sinks and the phyc chair. There are lots of others too.

Perhaps somebody would like to declare themselves in charge of this side of the project and I can make a forum with them a moderator and also give them the password so they can post news on the blog? Perhaps Bami would be up for this?

My previous model + GIMP 2 pixelize effect. But you could just change resolution of the image by .5 to get the same. Maybe someone could make 2D graphics on the 3D rendered stuff, or some 'comic' textures to put on them in max/blender that would make it more TH-like.

and Plant before/after

I could be interested in managing this project as there isn't much to translate or lua to write yet... Rolling Eyes It seems we are a few who would want to work with such a project. Smile

Good idea! But as Jack said - possibly there are Plugins out there for 3ds Max and such tools that handle this by itself?! Cool

But, look for correct lighting! The plant and trash from Kamo gets light from wrong direction.

I don't think I speak for only myself when I say that we haven't really bothered too much about lighting yet, though that too is very fun to play around with... Smile It's more of a discussion about concepts and how to do it/not do it right now.

Max have a lot of materials etc. This is default Ink and Paints material.

I have to work on getting it to look better Wink dunno how it looks in Blender plugins/materials.

Maybe cause they dont have any lightning Very Happy but I think lightning should be added at the end by one person to all models, so that all of them have light from the same angle and look similiar.
